SCOPE: Standing Committee on Professional Exchange

About SCOPE:

The Standing Committee On Professional Exchange (SCOPE) constitutes the first and largest exchange program within the IFMSA. It has been running since the organization's foundation in 1951.

International (IFMSA):

Brief History

The Standing Committee On Professional Exchange (SCOPE) was the first Standing Committee to be created within the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), and forms its backbone. The student exchange scheme was set up in 1951 SCOPE, but the now-familiar common application form was not introduced until later, in1968. Starting from 1956, 11 countries participated in SCOPE exchanges; this number kept on growing as years passed and as IFMSA expanded, and in 2006, more than 676 Local Committee and 1003 Medical Faculty participated in the exchange program, sending over 7000 students to benefit from a clinical clerkship in 78 different countries.

Mission Statement

"The aim of SCOPE is to promote international understanding and co-operation amongst medical students and all health professionals through international exchange of students." (IFMSA-Bylaws)

As by its existence, SCOPE had the mission of promoting cultural understanding and co-operation amongst medical students and all health professionals, through the facilitation of international student exchanges. The exchange program offers students a unique educational and cultural experience in addition to their regular medical curriculum. SCOPE plays a major role in helping the students to broaden their understanding of medical and social conditions in different countries.

Local (LeMSIC):

Brief History

SCOPE-LeMSIC was first created within AUB since 1956. It followed the course of IFMSA as both grew together. During the civil war, the exchange program to Lebanon suffered as much as the country and it was not until 1997 with the re-instauration of LeMSIC that SCOPE became active again. Since this second birth, SCOPE-LeMSIC has sent over 600 students on exchange programs abroad and was welcomed as many. It has also expanded to other universities, among which USJ and Balamand, in it mission to offer all Lebanese medical students this unique exchange program. This year, SCOPE-LeMSIC has reached the record contract signing of more than 80 contracts.

Why should you go on exchange?

  • It's a unique educational and cultural experience
  • It helps to broaden your understanding of both medical and social conditions in different countries
  • It offers an exceptional chance to make new friends from all over the world.
