Global Diabetes Walk
On the 14th of November, 2007 SCOPH participated in the Global Diabetes Walk (www.gwlk.info).

This event included a 45 minute walk in the city of Jounieh (northern suburb of Beirut) from the municipality building to Notre-Dame du Liban Hospital and back again.

A large banner was held throughout the walk and over 300 brochures were distributed to passers-by. These brochures contained information about the risk factors and methods of prevention of diabetes, in addition to a few important facts concerning the disease.

There were around 50 people walking with us in support of our cause against this terrible, yet preventable disease. Upon returning to the municipality, nurses from the ND du Liban Hospital had set up a stand where dozens of people had their BMIs and waist circumferences measured and were informed about the risks/prevention of diabetes. In addition, participants were given coupons for discounts on fasting blood glucose and other blood tests.

Also, the large statue of Notre-Dame du Liban (harissa) which stands on the hills above the city of Jounieh was lit up in blue in support of our cause! Prior to the event promotional posters were distributed in universities and schools in Beirut and Jounieh. We will continue the distribution of brochures over the next 2 days in several universities.
