Capacity Building

Training is one of the main pillars of LeMSIC. It is the tool by which this organization permits its members to exchange experiences and skills. Through holding these events, we empower medical students with knowledge and skills that are often not covered in the medical curricula, but are crucial to have better medical professionals and future global health leaders.

Needs Assessment Manual

Nowadays, Needs Assessment plays a considerable role within any organization as it helps identify and remedy to its inadequacies. In this regard, it is with great pleasure that LeMSIC issues its very first Needs’ Assessment Manual. The Small Working Group (SWG) who worked on this manual was initiated during the term 2020-21, under the coordination of the VPCB. Note that, among other things, this document comprises model Needs Assessment tools revolving around the following topics: Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) inclusion in creativity, Medical curriculum, NMO management and Exchanges.

World AIDS Day Training (WAD)

Every year, during December, SCORA organizes the WAD Walk event, where participants go to the streets to spread knowledge and decrease stigma and discrimination around the topic of HIV and AIDS. However, it may sometimes be difficult to talk about such sensitive topics in Lebanon. We thus delivered two trainings to approximately 200 members, in both USJ and UoB campuses.

Every year, during December, SCORA organizes the WAD Walk event, where participants go to the streets to spread knowledge and decrease stigma and discrimination around the topic of HIV and AIDS. However, it may sometimes be difficult to talk about such sensitive topics in Lebanon. Moreover, a lot of myths and misinformation circulate around HIV and AIDS. Hence, we believed as SCORA, that members were in need of capacity building before they could volunteer for this project. We thus delivered two trainings to approximately 200 members, in both USJ and UoB campuses.

The main goals of this training were:

  1. To increase participants’ knowledge on HIV and AIDS (Mode of transmission, prevention methods, diagnosis, treatment…)
  2. Reflection on the stigma and discrimination surrounding this topic
  3. To develop participants’ communication skills when it comes to raising awareness

Bone Marrow Transplant Workshop

Our mission as future doctors is to help others not only be cured but also to prevent the occurrence of any other disease. Our vision is to build a competent medical society with the maximum amount of knowledge they could gain. For that, we tackled the issue of Bone Marrow Transplantation,  since many medical students lack information on this topic. We also realized the urge to know the procedure, potential donors and complications of such a process, and to be capable of raising the awareness on the importance of this issue among all university students. Since we should share our knowledge, communication is the key. For that, a session also delivered the importance of non verbal communication and emphasized on its importance while sending our message to others.

Safe Access to Abortion

This training was centered around the access to safe abortion. The training started with a debate. Participants were asked to imagine that they were all advisors to the minister of health, and they were about to set the law on abortion in Lebanon. They were asked to reflect on some questions, such as “will they legalize abortion? If yes, would they set some restrictions?”, to formulate a law and to defend it. During the rest of the training, different points were discussed such as the prevalence and consequences of unsafe abortion worldwide, the safe vs. unsafe methods of abortion, and more. Participants were then divided into small working groups and asked to brainstorm possible projects they could work on locally regarding raising awareness on access to safe abortion. Finally, a gallery walk took place where participants walked around the room to read facts and statistics on the topic, and share their feelings about them.
