Statement on the recent events of Sheikh Jarrah

The Palestinian neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah has witnessed and is still witnessing the most horrendous violations against its inhabitants, in addition to the continuous assaults which have repetitively threatened the safety and security of its Palestinian residents. These events unfold as Israeli authorities increase their efforts to force their hegemony and authority over more Palestinian land and take over the homes and neighborhoods of Palestinians indigenous to that land, without any regard to the most basic human rights which have been continuously violated [1]. The atrocities conducted by the Israeli state have been hopelessly called out by many international human rights organizations such as Amnesty International [2] and the Human Rights Watch that states that “The Israeli government continued to enforce severe and discriminatory restrictions on Palestinians’ human rights” [3], also pushing the UN’s human rights office to desperately call to “Stop evictions in East Jerusalem neighbourhood immediately” on the 7th of May 2021 [4].

Despite the deafening silence of the international community  regarding what is happening, we cannot as the Lebanese Medical Students’ International Committee (LeMSIC) stay silent on what is considered an active ethnic cleansing according to the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention, and the clear violations of the Palestinians’ right to shelter, security and a decent life.

Based on what was presented above, LeMSIC condemns all these attempts and assaults which represent clear violations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and international laws [5]. It is apparent that many articles of the UDHR have been widely violated by the Israeli state with article 9 stating that “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile”, and article 12 clearly declaring that “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation”.

We express our full solidarity with the residents of Sheikh Jarrah particularly, and the Palestinian people generally, against all the descrimination they are continuously being subjected to and the violations of their right to shelter, healthcare, movement, security and adequate standard of living. We echo the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ report of February 2021 showing that there are “persisting human rights violations throughout the occupied Palestinian territory, including violations of the right to life and physical integrity impacting men, women, children and people with disabilities; restrictions of freedom of movement and restrictions of the rights to a fair trial, freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly” [6].

In conclusion, we call upon:

  •  All governments and international human right organizations to urgently intervene and put an end to the constant assaults, violence and attempts of ethnic cleansing in Palestine.
  • The Israeli State to immediately halt all attacks on civilians, women, children and vulnerable populations, being Palestinians or others.
  • The United Nations with its constituents to sanction the Human Rights violations of the Israeli State.
  • Non-governmental organizations to ensure perseverance in the fight for Human Rights in Palestine and continuously pressure the international community to act.
  • Israeli citizens to call out their government’s actions and demand a stop to the discrimination and persecution of Palestinian civilians.
  • The Israeli State to respect the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [5] and the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action [7] when acting against civilians.

We emphasize that human right issues are international concerns that are neither to be ignored nor treated selectively, as every violation to the rights of any person or population should warrant the same international attention and be a trigger for all relevant organizations to act and intervene, irrespective of the timing, place and the identity of the oppressor.

There is no pretext or plea that can justify the killing of civilians and it is high time for the Israeli State and the International Community to put an end to the atrocities happening in Palestine. Let us learn and not repeat history’s most brutal genocides and exterminations, with a different race and ethnic group as the target and victim today.

Full solidarity,

Lebanese Medical Students’ International Committee (LeMSIC)
