The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), founded in 1951, is one of the world’s oldest and largest student-run organizations. It represents, connects and engages every day with medical students from 135 NMOs in 125 countries around the globe.
Our work is divided into four main global health areas: Public Health, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Medical Education and Human Rights and Peace. Each year, we organize over 13,000 clinical and research exchanges programs for our students to explore innovations in medicine, healthcare systems and healthcare delivery in other settings. IFMSA brings people together to exchange, discuss and initiate projects to create a healthier world. It trains its members to give them the skills and resources needed to be health leaders. It advocates for the pressing issues that matter to us to shape the world we want. And it does deliver: our projects, our campaigns and our activities positively impact the physicians-to be, the communities they serve, as well as the health systems around the world in which they practice as a trainee and eventually a medical doctor.
General Assemblies
LeMSIC actively participates in the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) General Assemblies, aiming to inspire the next generation of physicians to become leaders and advocates. These assemblies provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, networking, and learning through various programming sessions. Key features of these gatherings include Standing Committee meetings, governance and decision-making sessions, training opportunities for personal and professional development, as well as presentations of inspiring activities and projects.
During the March Meeting, the Executive Board is elected, while the August Meeting is reserved for the election of the remaining Team of Officials and the members of the Supervising Council. Host countries are chosen a year in advance by the Federation's National Member Organizations (NMOs), ensuring that the organizing committee has ample time to create an optimal environment for medical students to learn, discuss, network, and exchange ideas.
LeMSIC has consistently made its presence felt at all General Assemblies by actively participating in plenaries, sessions, and fairs, as well as by winning awards.
Regional Meetings
Regional Meetings are held annually within each IFMSA region and are hosted by at least one National Member Organization (NMO) from the respective region. Typically, the African Regional Meeting takes place in December, the Americas in January, the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) in February, Europe in April, and Asia-Pacific in June or July.
Candidatures for hosting these meetings are voted on by the NMOs of each region. The Regional Director is responsible for providing full support to the organizing committee and working with the Regional Teams to develop the session content.
LeMSIC's presence at the EMR Regional Meetings has consistently been remarkable, yielding outstanding outcomes. Our members frequently describe these meetings as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, enriching their personal and professional development both within and outside of IFMSA.
IFMSA Programs
IFMSA Programs are centralized initiatives that encompass a wide range of activities organized by both IFMSA National Member Organizations (NMOs) and the international body of IFMSA. These programs address critical issues within specific fields, aligning with our mission as medical students and global health advocates. They serve to connect local, national, and international efforts, contributing collectively to impactful outcomes.
LeMSIC has successfully enrolled 12 activities in these programs between 2021 and 2023, and we are proud to announce the enrollment of 8 new activities, further demonstrating our commitment to addressing key global health challenges.
Other Opportunities
As a member of LeMSIC, a full National Member Organization, you are eligible to join the IFMSA delegation to prestigious external meetings such as the World Health Assembly, AMEE, COP, WONCA and others. This opportunity is available after obtaining LeMSIC's support, which is granted based on criteria outlined in our bylaws and through the evaluation of a dedicated support committee.
